The Salter’s Company

The Salters’ Company, originating from 1394, is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies, ranked number nine in the order of precedence.

In medieval times The Salters’ Company members were salt traders, involved in the preparation of chemical mixtures for use in food. Nowadays they are involved in several charitable foundations, philanthropy and science education. The Company’s flagship charity, The Salters’ Institute, is one of the country’s leaders in the field of science curriculum development with the aim to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young.

The Salt Collection

Not only is Salters’ Hall a unique venue in London; it’s also home to a national collection of domestic saltcellars, and its pieces can be viewed by special arrangement. When hiring the Hall for your event, a part of the collection – saltcellars, portraits of past Masters and original documents – can be viewed in the Salt Lobby as well as throughout the Hall.

Salt has always been an important element of life and has served as currency at various times and places. Thus, saltcellars became a status symbol – those who could afford salt kept it in a container; at events, guests were seated above or below the salt according to their position in society.

A Walk with Ian Swankie

This is a lovely distrct, a wedge-shaped triangle in the City of Westminster whch was given notoriety by the film with Stanley Holloway.

You will see the wedding cake icing stucco buildings, spcialist shops, the birthplace of tennis, an Italian water tower, gothic churches, great squares, and the man who built it all - Thomas Gubitt.

Meet at Pimlico station at 10.45am

the walk finishes at Tate Britain in time for lunch.

WALKING TOUR of LONDON

We will Meet at  PRET A MANGER in PATERNOSTER SQUARE at 10.45 am.

The nearest underground station is ST. PAUL'S underground station.


The walk begins at Thomas Heatherwick's "Angel's Wings near St. Paul's Cathedral.
We move along seeing many wonderful pieces of public art, hidden gardens and alleyways. We will see some of Wren's Churches, along with some new gleaming skyscrapers of the city.

The walk concludes at approximately 1pm near Bank Station. 

Individual audio guides will be provided.

Ideas for lunch will be given on the day.

TICKETS WILL COST £16 and be available at the MARCH and APRIL meetings.

Apsley House, commonly known as 'Number One London', is home to the Duke of Wellington after his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo. The interior of the house has changed very little since the days of the Iron Duke and retains its place as one of the last great aristocratic town houses in London.

This can be used to browse around the local area i.e. Shops, The church in Church street or simply stay in the Swan. Departure from Lavenham will be 16.15 -16.30. NOTE Meet outside The Oaks Residential Home at 8.00 If you are catching the coach at Tesco, Gallows Corner. Please give your car registration number so it can be presented to Tesco. We gathered on a rather foggy September morning to visit the Watts Gallery (home of G.F Watts 1817-1904) near Guildford. In spite of the fog we had a trouble free journey and arrived at the gallery in good time. We then visited the gallery, now splendidly restored, where our knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide explained the symbolism and meaning of a few well chosen paintings in each section. Over one hundred paintings are displayed and include portraits, landscapes and his major symbolic works. The gallery also houses some of Watts’ massive sculptures. After leaving the gallery we were led down the road to the local cemetery to visit the chapel. Mary Watts (2nd wife of G.E. Watts) designed the chapel in the Arts and Crafts style. The chapel is circular and the exterior is decorated with a terracotta frieze also designed by Mary. She was a potter and had a pottery close to the gallery. Members of the pottery class which included all ages and classes from plough boys to the lady of the manor made the clay tiles from plates that Mary had prepared. After lunch we had time to visit Limnerslease and the visitors centre, or re-visit the gallery. The group negotiated an uphill walk to Limnerslease. The house was commissioned from Arts and Crafts designer Ernest George to be the Autumn/Winter home of George and Mary Watts. George by this time was in his seventies. The interior of the house has seen many changes since Watts death in 1904. Some original features remain but some have disappeared. There are plans for the house to be completely restored with articles of original furniture from Watts’ London home. Fund raising to save Limnerslease for the nation is still ongoing.
